A very specialized form of manual therapy consists of alternating levels of pressure on the areas of muscle spasm.
Pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbows. Pain Scale 6 to 8 between (1)-(10 being painful).
The human lymph system is a network of vessels that parallel and connect to the circulatory system. The main functions
of the lymph system are to: (1) cleanse the blood by removing waste products; and (2) provide a mode of storage
(lymph nodes) and transportation for lymphocytes-- highly specialized cells that play an important role in your body's
autoimmune system. If you are fighting a virus, you may notice slight swelling in your lymph nodes around your neck.
This indicates that your lymphocytes are actively fighting the virus.
Unlike arteries, the lymph vessels do not have an organ (heart) to move along the lymph fluid. Lymph vessels are more
like the venous (veins) system, relying on muscle twitching and one-way flow valves to keep lymph moving in one
direction. However, lymph can back up in cases where too much is produced, or where lymph vessels are damaged.
For example, women who have had masectomies often experience lymphatic congestion, due to the destruction to the
axillary lymph vessels. Lymphatic congestion can result in edema (swelling in the tissues) in the hands, arms or lower
legs. It can also make one feel ill and fatigued.
